Patient Information for Travel Vaccinations

People who are travelling outside the UK may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases that are found in other parts of the world.

In the UK, the childhood vaccination programme protects against a number of diseases, such as tetanus, but does not cover most of the infectious diseases that are found overseas.

If you are planning to travel abroad, you should check which vaccinations are recommended for the areas you will be visiting.  You can find this information on the following website:
http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations

Getting vaccinated

Not all vaccinations are available through the NHS and you may need to pay for some.  See NHS choices website for more information and advice.

Getting travel vaccinations

Not all travel vaccinations are free, and not all will be available from you GP.

Some vaccinations are available free of charge on the NHS for overseas travel.  This will depend on your risk of developing the medical condition – for example, due to where you are travelling to, and what you are planning to do on your trip.  The following vaccines may be free of charge:

  • Diphtheria, Polio and Tetanus booster
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis B (for some people)

The following vaccines are not usually available free of charge on the NHS for overseas travel:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Meningococcal Vaccine
  • Rabies
  • Cholera

Yellow fever vaccines are only available from designated centres.  The National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) can help you find where you can get a yellow fever vaccination.

If your GP cannot provide the vaccinations that you need please contact the following specialist travel clinic:

MASTA Travel Well Clinic
Newcastle Travel Clinic, Newcastle Medical Centre
(Within Boots the Chemist), Hotspur Way,
Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7XE
Tel. 0191 232 2973 or  0330 100 4272

The cost of travel vaccines at private clinics will vary, but could be around £60 for each dose of a vaccine.  Therefore, if a vaccine requires three doses, the total cost could be around £180.  It is worth taking this into consideration when budgeting for your trip.
